Take Control of Your Browsing Experience?

Do you want to add a download button to YouTube videos? or perform auto skip-intros when watching Netflix? or add IMDB ratings in your Netflix browser? Do you want to add or edit any website in the easiest way possible? Introducing User scripts…

User scripts put you in control of your browsing experience. Once installed, they automatically make the sites you visit better by adding features, making them easier to use, or taking out the annoying bits and ads. The user scripts are generally written by other users and posted to share with the world. They’re free to install and easy to use.

To use these scripts you need to first install a user script manager. Which user script manager you can use depends on which browser you use:

After you install Tampermonkey or Violentmonkey (which I personally use), you can google “user scripts” or just go directly to https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts to find scripts you wanna try.

Here is a sample script:

After you install Tampermonkey or Violentmonkey, try the script YouTube Downloader Script Installation from greasyfork:

Click on install the green install script button and it will take you to the script page:

Screen Shot 2020-01-10 at 11.06.20 AM.png

Go to Options at the top right corner of your browser and check the “Close after installation” (this would just close the page after you are done for faster installations)

Screen Shot 2020-01-10 at 11.06.30 AM.png

Now, install the script by just clicking on the “Confirm Installation” button.

Boom! visit Youtube.com and start downloading…

Try other scripts and if you have any question just comment below.

Enjoy the Scripts!

Google Drive Tips?

  1. All PDF documents and scanned text images can be converted to editable format when you right click and “open with” Google Docs.
  2. Search for any word in documents and even in text images by searching for the word in the search bar.
  3. Shift+Z creates an instant shortcut for any folder or file so you can put it in two different locations at the same time; that way you don’t lose duplicate file space. PS: If you delete one, you delete both.
  4. Set an expiration date to any shared-by-email material by hovering over the region of the editing pen in the share options, a timer icon will appear with which you can set a date for the shared folder or shared file to expire.

Screen Shot 2019-11-30 at 1.00.40 PM.png

You probably have a few dozen duplicate files, chiefly MP3 and photos in the Google Drive. This https://softgateon.herokuapp.com/drivecleaner/ is a handy tool that scans selected directories and finds any duplicate files inside them. The app works with all sorts of files and can also be configured to scan sub-folders within a given directory. It supports IE10+, Chrome, Firefox… even provides a connection with Google Drive. You can directly scan duplicate files with your drive.

For Chrome users, here is it as a Chrome extension: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/duplicate-file-finder-cle/bkefnddmfngncidpmibnleniddiopejg

10 Gmail Hacks ?

Here is a list of tips by the Chronicle that will surely help you “Gmail“!

1. Labels

Find yourself receiving thousands of emails and don’t seem to understand how you could categorize all the emails on a particular topic, at one place? Well, like in real life, you can read the mail, label it those emails and voila! You create a virtual folder on the topic.

These make it easier to search and find an email along with which, adding label(s) to email, categorizes them such that upon clicking on the label you will be able to view all the other email you have labelled as the same as well.

How to add a label

To add a new label to your inbox, go to settings on the right hand-side of the screen. From there select the labels tab and scroll to the bottom, and add a new label.

Adding a label to an email

Select and open an email you want to label, then click on the ‘label’ icon at the top, next to the three dots.

2. Mark a colleague

Ever writing an email and wished it you could mention people in it, perhaps even like on WhatsApp?
Actually you can.

Only, instead of using the ‘@’ sign, using the ‘+’ sign and follow it with the person’s name. Gmail will subsequently list your contacts and you can pick therein. This will also subsequently cc the contact on the email so they get a copy too.

3. Un-sending feature

Let’s face it, we have all typed an over-reaching, faulty, rude or inappropriate email at some point or the other. In the unfortunate occasion that you have accidently sent it to another unfortunate receiver in your contacts list, you can use this feature and save yourselves.

Present in Google’s settings tab, you can activate an ‘undo send’ feature that can be times to work within 5-30 seconds.

Under this, after sending an email a bar would appear which would let you undo sending the email and edit or discard it instead.

4. Different email addresses

If you’re, naturally, finding it tough to make different emails for personal and work purposes, Google allows you to add keywords to your email address for easy sorting.

For example an email sent to (your username)+(purpose eg. work)@gmail.com will not only land in your inbox but will also easily be able to sort it using the keyword in the search box.

5. Tasks

Did you know Google also allows you to create tasks for yourself inside the app under a feature known as ‘Tasks’?Say if you can’t seem to remember to reply or send an email, the feature will let you set a reminder for yourself at a particular time and date.

You can use this by opening an email and clicking on the three dots at the top. From there you can select ‘add to tasks’ and set yourself a reminder.

6. Personal level indicator

Filter through mass, promotional or informative emails to know exactly which ones have been specifically addressed to you. This feature stars emails based on how personally this has been addressed to you, such as if it is out of a mailing list, directed to three to four people including you or if it is only directed to you.

You can activate this by going to settings on the top right and scrolling down on the ‘general’ tab to ‘personal level indicators’. This will show no arrows if the email is sent through a mailing list, a single arrow if sent to more than one person and only one arrow if it is specifically addressed to you.

7. Let others check your email

Going out of town, or need somebody to help you answer all your emails on a deadline? This Gmail feature lets you give other accounts access to your inbox without giving away login credentials.

Simply, go to settings, accounts and import and select ‘Grant access to your account’. You can then also choose whether you would want to see emails they have checked as marked ‘read’ or not.

8.Schedule Send

Gmail’s this feature lets you type in your email, save it to drafts and then time it to a setting you would like for it to deliver at.

To activate it, type or open a draft and click on the small arrow next to the send button to schedule and send your email at a better time (and date).

9. Self-destruct

In an unlikely combination, however still useful, Google will now allow you to exchange emails which self-destruct a day after you send them. So be it an embarrassing image, text, or video it will delete minimum within a day and remain copy, forwarding, downloading, and print protected.

To send a confidential email click on the lock icon at the bottom, before sending your email then set a period after which it would self-destruct.

10. Payments and subscriptions

Last but not the least, sort out your unimportant emails and separate out the important ones through Google. By going to ‘Google account’ from your profile picture on the right and going to payments and subscriptions, you can see all information on reservations, payments, subscriptions, etc. from your emails in one place.

Watch Star Wars in Mac’s Terminal App?

This could be the greatest trick on Apple Laptops which makes no particular sense but even; you should try it! The Death Star, R2D2, spaceships and the rest of the Episode 4 story retold in Terminal symbols and graphics will blow you away! but there is no sound… I wish they rolled the score on the bottom but I think I’m asking too much! :)

Prior macOS Sierra, open up Terminal, type in:

telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl

On macOS Sierra and higher macOS versions, you should use a different command:

nc towel.blinkenlights.nl 23

Reset NVRAM in MAC?

NVRAM (nonvolatile random-access memory), the updated Mac terminology for PRAM (Parameter RAM), is a small amount of memory that your Mac uses to store certain settings and never clear them out to access them quickly.

Settings that can be stored in NVRAM include sound volume, display resolution, startup-disk selection, time zone, and recent kernel panic information.

Method 1: Startup command

If you find that an NVRAM reset might resolve issues, there is more than one way to clean it up. The most common method is by holding down a few keys a second after powering on your Mac:

1. Power off your Mac first.

2. Press your Mac’s power button and then hold these four keys at the same time:

⌘ + option + P + R

3. Continue holding the keys until your Mac restarts for the second time. On older Macs the chime will sound upon restart. On newer Macs, the Apple logo will appear and then disappear.

                      Command keyplusOption keyplusP keyplusR key

After pressing the power button, press and hold each of the above-mentioned keys all at once before the first “beep” at the start. When you hear the second “beep”; release the keys.

Method 2: Terminal

Use the Terminal for the same procedure:

  1. Close all apps and open Terminal (Finder > Utilities > Terminal).
  2. write sudo nvram -c press Enter.
  3. Enter the Administrator password press Enter.
  4. write sudo shutdown -r now and press Enter.

The computer will now restart and that’s it!

Download YouTube Captions?

Let’s say you watched the “Thank You Notes” with Jim Fallon (https://youtu.be/_n_78kduHrI) for example and you want to transcribe what he says.

Fortunately, the video has closed captions and there’s also an interactive transcript so the good news is that you can download the captions file by copying pasting the following URL into your address bar and replacing the Video_ID below with Jim Fallon’s video ID:

Then replace VIDEO_ID with the ID of the YouTube video. (The Video ID in this example is: _n_78kduHrI)

When you replace the ID you’ll have an XML file and you can extract plain text by removing all the tags: just Right-click on the page, select “view source”, copy all the text and paste it on this page.

Send High Resolution Photos/Videos via WhatsApp?

On WhatsApp, sending photos or videos via Share or Gallery attachments are obviously downgrading the resolution of our files. But Whatsapp lets us send documents up to 100 Mb. So #Photos and #Videos (which are less than 105 Mb) can be sent without any quality compression IF And Only IF; they are sent as Documents:

Click on the attachment and choose Documents, at the top of the screen (in Android phones) or at the bottom of the screen (in iPhones) you’ll find: “Browse other docs” , click on it and choose your photo or video (should be maximum 105 Mb) and boom! Whatsapp will send the file without affecting its quality and resolution.

Speed Up Your MAC?

1. Find resource-hungry processes

Some apps are more power hungry than others and can slow your Mac to a crawl. To see which apps are eating up your system resources, use Activity Monitor. You can open it from the Utilities folder of your Applications folder, or use Spotlight to find it.

Activity Monitor details five different resources: CPU, Memory, Energy, Disk, and Network usage. If your Mac is running slowly, pay special attention to the CPU section. It shows how processes affect CPU (processor) activity. Click a column name, such as % CPU, to list all programs by the amount of CPU they’re using.

How to speed up Mac: activity monitor

If you see that some app is using a lot of CPU power, you can close it from here by choosing the app with the mouse and clicking the X in the left-hand corner of the Activity Monitor.

2. Manage your startup items

It goes without saying that a clean startup helps speed up slow Mac. When your Mac launches faster, it takes less time to do anything. No waiting for Safari, Chrome or Firefox to launch — they open instantly. How do you get such speed? Well, when your Mac boots up, it runs a lot of unnecessary apps. But it’s quite easy to take control of it. Go to your System Preferences > Users & Groups and then click on your username. Now click on Login Items and select a program you don’t immediately need when your Mac starts up, and click the “-” button below.

How to speed up Mac: remove startup items

3. Turn off visual effects

A great tip to help you when you wonder how to speed up your Mac is to turn off visual effects. Sure, they look pretty, but who cares if your Mac is running slowly? Turning off some of the features can greatly speed up iMac or MacBook.

Here’s how to speed up a Mac by turning off some visual effects:

  1. Click System Preferences > Dock.
  2. Untick the following boxes: Animate opening applications, Automatically hide and show the Dock.
  3. Click on Minimize windows using and change Genie effect to Scale effect.

4. Delete browser add-ons

It’s 2019 and today’s browsers got overly sophisticated. Chrome and other browsers often get overloaded with various add-ons and extensions we install on top of them. These tools do a useful job like checking our grammar but we pay for that with reduced browser speed. You can battle that by reducing the number of open tabs and by removing any browser extensions you don’t need.

Here is how to delete extra browser extensions in all 3 main browsers:

How to make faster your MacBook 2019

5. Reindex Spotlight

If you recently updated your OS, you would be aware of the slowness that occurs when Spotlight is indexing. This only takes a few hours and then your Mac will be fine. But sometimes the indexing gets stuck, and you need to speed up a Mac. To solve this problem, you need to reindex Spotlight by going to System Preferences > Spotlight and clicking on the “Privacy” tab.

How to speed up Mac: reindex spotlight

Now drag your hard drive from Finder into the Privacy List. Once added, remove it by clicking the “-” sign. The indexing will start again, but hopefully, after a few hours, it will finish properly and boost your Mac speed.

6. Reduce Desktop Clutter

Remember, every desktop icon takes up RAM space. Fewer icons — the faster your Mac gets. When your Desktop is clean, restart your computer. And the newly-introduced “Desktop Stacks” feature on macOS Mojave lets you put those icons in order. If you’re running macOS High Sierra or older macOS version, don’t worry. The mere deletion of desktop items will make your MacBook faster.

7. Empty the caches

Cache files are temporary data used to speed up the processes. For example, a web browser will cache web pages to download a website faster when you revisit it. Sounds great, right? Actually, it is, but there is always “but.” Over time, these cache files take much storage on your Mac, and instead of speeding things up, they slow your computer down.

So how to speed up MacBook by emptying the caches? There are two ways: you can clean them up manually (step-by-step) or you can remove them in a second with a cleaning utility CleanMyMac X.

If you want to clear cache automatically, do the following:

  1. Launch CleanMyMac — download the app for free here
  2. Choose System Junk.
  3. Click Scan and then Clean.

That’s it!

However, if you decide to clean cache files manually, check out his guide on “How to Clear Cache on a Mac.”

8. Uninstall unused apps

Another proven way to speed up MacBook Pro, MacBook Air or iMac is to uninstall the application you don’t need anymore. So how to remove unwanted apps on your Mac? You may be surprised to find out that simply dragging them to a Trash bin is not enough. It leaves gigabytes of junk behind. Dragging documents and movies to Trash works fine but apps should be uninstalled completely. Check out a step-by-step guide on “How to Install Apps on a Mac.” It describes the manual way and the easy way.

9. Clean up Mac’s hard drive

If you want the most bang for your buck, cleaning your hard drive is by far the best and easiest way to speed up MacBook or iMac. Go through your hard drive and clean out everything that is slowing it down. But what is slowing down my Mac? What to look for? Caches, logs, apps, widgets, hidden trash, large and old files.

How to make slow Mac faster Mojave

Of course, you can clean up your Mac manually. But finding and removing all these things takes time. And you have to know where to look. The good news is that there is an easy solution to the problem. CleanMyMac X, by MacPaw has everything you need to finish the 3-hour task of hard drive cleanup in under 5 minutes. Even more, it will clean up the junk you didn’t even know about and speed up Mac.

10. Update your Mac (OS and hardware)

Typically, Macs take care of themselves. Having the latest software from Apple makes speeding up your Mac simple. To check your version of the operating system, click the Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen and then About This Mac. Make sure you have the latest macOS/OS X installed (or the latest you can install since not all Macs upgrade to macOS Mojave).

How to speed up Mac: update macOS and software

As for the hardware upgrade, as you’ve probably guessed, it is costly. But if your OS is the latest possible version and you’ve cleaned up the hard drive, and you still have troubles with speed, this could be your solution. Keep in mind that upgrading some hardware is not possible for certain Macs.

Upgrading to the latest OS and upgrading your hardware will typically solve a bunch of slowness issues.

11. Create a new user profile on your Mac

If you want to go even further than updating the macOS — simply create a new user profile on your Mac. Some settings in your current user profile may have been compromised or got cluttered with outdated system logs. You can scrap all these and start your profile afresh.

  • Click the Apple logo > System Preferences
  • Click Users & Groups
  • Press to Unlock changes
  • Add a new user with a “+”

Next up, you will have to import your crucial user data to your new account. Luckily, macOS has a special Shared Folder just for this purpose. It can be found by clicking Finder > Go > Computer > Macintosh HD > Users. Drop your documents to this folder and then log in to your new account. Well done! You’re starting a new life!

12. Free up RAM using Terminal

If you made it to this tip, you probably have enough skill to start using Mac’s Terminal app. It’s like using a magic wand — there are dozens of helpful combinations that you can use to command your Mac. One of them is used to free up RAM instantly.

You can apply this trick when your system is running out of available memory. In other words, when a particular app freezes up and desperately needs some fresh memory.

Open Terminal app via Launchpad
Paste in the following command:

sudo purge

> Hit Enter
You will be asked to enter your system password

Speed up MacBook quickly

If you’re not comfortable with using Terminal, there is a shortcut way to free up RAM that requires no hacking skills. You can download the app I’ve mentioned above, CleanMyMac X, preferably, the 2019 version.

13. Reset SMC & PRAM

Sometimes your Mac will act strange for no apparent reason — it sleeps or shuts down unexpectedly, the battery doesn’t charge properly, the keyboard backlight behaves incorrectly, and your Mac performs slowly. If these issues are not solved by restarting your computer, you’ll need to reset SMC (system management controller) and PRAM (parameter RAM).

Resetting the SMC

How to speed up MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and MacBook

First of all, you need to determine whether your Mac’s battery is removable. That’s because the process of resetting the SMC for computers that have a non-removable battery is quite different.

If the battery is non-removable:

  1. Shut down your Mac.

  2. Press Shift+Control+Option on your keyboard and press the power button at the same time. Hold the keys and a power button for 10 seconds.

  3. Release all keys.

  4. Press the power button to turn on your Mac.

If the battery is removable:

  1. Shut down your Mac.

  2. Remove the battery.

  3. Press the power button and hold it for 5 seconds.

  4. Press the power button again to turn on your computer.

How to speed up iMac, Mac Mini, Mac Pro

  1. Shut down your computer.

  2. Unplug a power cord and wait 15 seconds.

  3. Plug the power cord in.

  4. Wait 5 seconds and press the power button.

Resetting the PRAM

  1. Shut down your Mac.

  2. Press the power button.

  3. Press the Command+Option+P+R keys at the same time.

  4. Hold the keys until your Mac restarts.

  5. Release the keys.

Resetting SMC and PRAM may seem to be difficult, but it can really help with Mac speedup.

14. Replace your HDD with SSD

You can breathe new life into your Mac by replacing its traditional hard drive with a solid-state drive. Adding an SSD will make your computer boot faster, copy files in the blink of an eye and make the system really fast when multitasking.

A word of caution: it’s recommended that you consult a professional before attempting any hardware upgrades yourself because the process is quite challenging. And don’t forget to make a complete backup of your data before replacing your HDD with SSD, so that you’ll be able to restore all important files if something goes wrong.

By today’s standards, a good SSD will have 240-256 GB of capacity. It is recommended to clean install the macOS on the new drive. When asked about the formatting system, choose APFS+ file system which works much faster.

15. Add more RAM

How to speed up my Mac? How to get it run faster? In fact, upgrading RAM is usually a great solution for improving your Mac’s performance. But first, check how much RAM you physically have on your Mac.

Click on the Apple logo > About this Mac…
Look out for Memory specs

The normal amount in 2019 is anything above 8 GB of RAM. An extra 8 GB RAM card will cost you around $30.

The more RAM your Mac has at its disposal, the more windows or tabs you can have open without slowing the system down. With more RAM, the operating system isn’t making calls to virtual memory which uses the hard drive and slows down the system considerably. Here’s a comprehensive guide on  “How to Upgrade Your Mac’s RAM.”

Tip:  One more hardware solution to speed up your MacBook, is to reapply MacBook’s thermal paste which has probably worn off over time. The tell-tale sign for this is your Mac overheating too often. The thermal paste transfers heat away from your Mac’s processor thus making it more efficient

16. Use CleanMyMac X

If you don’t feel like spending the next several hours trying to get your Mac in shape manually, there is a great solution. Download CleanMyMac X and let it do the job for you. It’s a powerful utility for speeding up Mac. It has a dedicated feature, called Speed that battles the slow macOS. It does some of the following:

  • Disables your Hung Apps
  • Disables Heavy Memory Consumers
  • Runs macOS Maintenance Scripts
  • Switches off extra Login items and more

Speed up MacBook PRO

Some users reported that the Speed feature is pretty impressive, especially on older Mac models.

Chrome Dark?!

Since the feature is long overdue, Google developers created a command flag through which other developers get an early hands-on of the feature and give a few suggestions on it. The only catch is that it only works on Google Chrome Canary version.

Anyway, if you are looking to get Dark mode on Google Chrome right now, here are the steps –

1. Download the latest Google Chrome Canary version.

2. Right-click on its newly created shortcut on the desktop and go to properties.

3. Edit the Target Tab and add “–force-dark-mode ” at the end. [Without the inverted commas]

4. Click on Apply.

Here are the screenshots of how Google Chrome looks in the Dark Mode. You’ll notice that the appearance is very much similar to the dark color of Incognito mode in the Chrome browser

Microsoft Windows 10 introduced Dark mode at the time of 2018’s April Update. And since Internet Edge is already having a Dark mode of its own, it was speculated that Google Chrome would soon introduce it. However, the project was stopped in the middle because of certain flaws in it.

Although the Chrome Dark theme is still under development, at least, we are now sure of the fact that the feature will roll out later this year in the stable version.

Top OS for hacking?

1. Kali Linux
Kali Linux is an advanced penetration testing tool that should be a part of every security professional’s toolbox. Penetration testing involves using a variety of tools and techniques to test the limits of security policies and procedures. What Kali has done is collect just about everything you’ll need in a single CD. It includes more than 300 different tools, all of which are open-source and available on GitHub.

2. Parrot Security OS

BackBox is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu. It has been developed to perform penetration tests and security assessments. Designed to be fast, easy to use and provide a minimal yet complete desktop environment, thanks to its own software repositories, always being updated to the latest stable version of the most used and best known ethical hacking tools.

4. Samurai Web Testing Framework
The Samurai Web Testing Framework is a live Linux environment that has been pre-configured to function as a web pen-testing environment. The CD contains the best of the open source and free tools that focus on testing and attacking websites. In developing this environment, we have based our tool selection on the tools we use in our security practice. We have included the tools used in all four steps of a web pen-test.

5. NodeZero Linux
Penetration testing and security auditing requires specialist tools. The natural path leads us to collecting them all in one handy place. However how that collection is implemented can be critical to how you deploy effective and robust testing.
All though NodeZero Linux can be used as a “Live System” for occasional testing, its real strength comes from the understanding that a tester requires a strong and efficient system. This is achieved in our belief by working at a distribution that is a permanent installation, that benefits from a strong selection of tools, integrated with a stable Linux environment.

  • Disconnect from your WiFi network, by holding down “option” and clicking on the WiFi icon in the menu bar, and clicking on “disconnect” under your WiFi name.

“Autorun” a File From CD?

My friend just called me to ask me what software makes his slideshow play the moment the CD is in the PC! (autorun)… Well I thought I’d share this with you:

The most simple way to do it is to open notebook and type:

then save this text to a file named autorun.inf

Burn this autorun.inf to the root of the cd while the show file is also in the root path of the cd.

Easier than installing Nero or specific software applications to do that, don’t you think? Nassim?!
